Octopus steals our guides camera
This story has taken off. So many people ask about it, we had to republish it. This happened last summer. However our guide Amee continues to have similar experiences with octopuses and her cameras!
One of our guides had an amusing encounter with an octopus the other day.
This guy stole my camera! He grabbed it and pulled so hard the strap broke. He grabbed it and went into his den. The den was so large that I was in up to my shoulder and could not feel the back. So he spit, grabbed me and I still could not find the camera. Another educator and some visitors tried luring him out with more shiny things. He would go right back into the cave when my hand went in the water to try to get back into the den. I finally called the lifeguards and told them I needed a longer arm since an octopus had stolen my camera and could not reach far enough into the den to find it. I hear them laughing and saying it must be me.( I will never live that one down.) Who else would it be? So two lifeguards and one Marine Safety officer later the fun really began. One lifeguard stuck his hand in the den and the octopus grabbed him and he did not like that. The other one did not want anything to do with an octopus. Guess lifeguards have their limits of what is not okay for them. So I was the only one sticking my arm in in the den. The octopus was grabbing my hand and blowing jets of water at it too. I finally got a stick and gently swept along the bottom of the cave and finally got the camera out. (This was with the Marine Safety Officers permission and supervision.) 45 minutes of pure entertainment. And the octopus even got a shot of himself as he went into his den!

Octopus self portrait! Who knew they they liked photography so much?

Give me your camera!
Here we go again. At least it is a baby and not strong enough to steal the camera! It did try though.
