Tube Snails

When you are walking on the beach or around the tidepools you will most likely see a tube snail shell. What you are looking at is actually a group of tube snail tubes that are entwined. Each tube held one snail. They will build on top of each other to ensure safety and stability against the waves. The tube snail opening is about a half inch or smaller. Their bodies are cemented to the shell. They catch food by expelling mucus to catch debris. They then suck the mucus back into the tube to feed. They are often found in Giant Kelp holdfasts.
