Pacific Jack Mackerel
The Jack Mackerel are found in off shore waters. They live in large schools that can be found around pier pilings and in the kelp forests. They do everything as a school. When threatened they turn into a silvery mass that is constantly moving and changing shapes. They communicate with each other by sensing the tiniest movements of the others so they will react as a mass. The Mackerel is about 8 inches at adulthood. They have silver bottoms and beautiful blue and green stripes on top. This one got into the tidepool and was trying to get back out. He kept getting stuck on the rocks trying to jump out so I finally picked him up and released him into the ocean. I hope he found his school!
