Ochre Stars

Ochre Stars are the sea stars we see most often in the tidepools. They come in various colors. You will see them in bright orange, brownish orange, purple and sometimes a pinkish red. They can get quite large. They have been measured at over a foot in diameter. They have raised white bumps on their backs that keep anything from hitching a ride. They are predatory and feed mostly on mussels. Sea Stars have thousands of tube feet that they walk with and cling on to surfaces with. Some of the Ochre stars in the pictures show some four legged. Five is the usual amount. This day was amazing! You could not walk without watching your feet for fear of stepping on one!
