Great Blue Heron

These are some of my favorite bird visitors to watch. They are very tall standing at 4 feet with a wing span that can reach 6 feet. Their coloring is a gray blue. Very patient hunters they will walk very slowly through the water. Once they spy a fish they will freeze. Then they strike with their long neck and sharp beak. Unlike most marine birds the Great Blue Heron builds their nests in trees. Most marine birds nest on the ground. We see them at the tidepools as well as at the Back Bay Estuary in Newport Beach. They are beautiful to see flying.
