Sandcastle Worms

The sandcastle worms build a large formation that looks like a drip sandcastle. The worms make the tubes out of sand and mucus. They suck in the sand and it mixes with their mucus. When they spit out the sand they create the tubes that are their homes. The more worms in one location the safer the “sandcastle” is. The worm is about 2 to 5 inches long. When they are under the water they put out “fans” to catch debris in the water to eat. The fans are blue to lavender in color. We have seen some spectacular sandcastle formations lately.

The blue fans are out.
