Tidepool Sculpin

These fish live their entire lives in the tidepools. They can be very difficult to spot at first due to their camouflage coloring. They also are able to lie on the bottom without moving. They can do this because they have no swim bladder and can move their gills by themselves. The adults can reach up to 6 inches long. They have flat fins that look like wings. They eat crabs and scavenge the bottom of the pools for food debris. I have seen them engage in fights with crabs over open mussels.
