Brittle Stars

Brittle stars used to show up in the tidepools often. Over the past seven years sightings have become less and less common. Generally they are found in the areas that is not exposed unless it is a minus tide. Unlike other Sea Stars they move using their arms and not tube feet. They use their tube feet to bring food into their mouth. They can move very quickly. They also break off arms as a defensive action. They can regenerate the arms quickly. They eat debris and small live animals. They can be found under rocks, buried in the sand, and in kelp that has washed ashore. They have also been called Serpent Stars due to their snake like leg movements.
